Round 2, Game 1 recap.

The Coyotes started round two, like they left round one, leaving us all gasping for breath until the very last second of overtime...again.  I have mentioned before that this was my first time experiencing round two live, and I successfully checked several things off of my "hockey bucket list":

1.  See your team play a second round game live.
2. See your team win a second round game.
3. See your team win a second round game in overtime.

Thanks to the Coyotes for helping me check off all three of those items.   Thanks also for my lack of voice, and leaving me both mentally and physically exhausted, again.  Love it.  Really I do.

The game itself left a little to be desired, neither team played particularly well.  I really think the layoff between round one and round two had a lot to do with that.  Nashville's defensive style really seemed to confuse the Coyotes, especially from about half way through the first, through most of the second.  The Coyotes had short spurts of pressure, but generally had a hard time getting things going.   That being said, were it not for a couple of really crazy bounces, the game could have been 3-0 or 3-1 and not needed overtime.  Nashville only scored one "legit" goal during the course of the game.  The other two were created by a strange bounce of the back glass, and a slow whistle from the referee.    I'm looking forward to see what kind of changes both coaches make before game two.  Dave Tippett was not happy with his team post-game, even though they did get the win.

There were a couple of things that I was surprised to see, or not see at the game:.

1. Rows of empty seats, especially down low.   It's my personal belief that you HAVE to sell out your home playoff games.  HAVE TO.   I thought at first that the crowd was simply late arriving, due to a 6pm local start time.  I know I would have had a hard time making it on time for a 6pm start if I had to work until 5pm, but that wasn't the case.   Come on Phoenix,  FILL THAT BUILDING.

2. Silence.  There was dead silence after Nashville scored.  It was sublime.  I've been to 12-14 Coyotes games at Jobing.com and last night was the first time that I didn't have to deal with a loud roar when the visitors scored.  I like that a lot.

3. Lack of physical play.  There was not a lot of hitting in this game, nothing like we saw in the Chicago series. My buddy and I even went so far to refer to it as "Olympic Hockey" for a while.  There weren't even a lot of post whistle scrums, until late in the third and overtime.  I'm hoping that the Coyotes can bring that physical element back for game two.

Lastly,   I'm in Vegas on Sunday. It's the first time I've actually been slightly disappointed to go to Vegas.  I'm hoping that I can find a decent sports book to enjoy the game from.  I'll be twittering if I can.

Round 2, starts Friday...

I'm writing this, watching the last game of round one.  It just seems right that the series that nobody watched,  Florida and New Jersey, gets overtime in game seven.  The first round is by far my favorite round, simply due to quantity and quality.  There are so many games, and they are all generally great games.  The first two weeks of the playoffs are my favorite by far. Lastly, I can't let round one go without saluting my boys from DC.  It was great to see the Caps get the OT winner in game seven.  Now back to your regularly scheduled Coyotes blogging.

Here are the match-ups to watch in the Coyotes/Predators series:

1. Goaltending.  Pecca Rinne vs. Mike Smith.   Rinne has been great all year.  Steady in the net.  Smith is on fire now, but keep in mind, he had his moments this season when we were all asking for Jason LaBarbera.

2. Coyotes atars vs. Nashville defense.  Phoenix needs Shane Doan, Radim Vrbarta and Ray Whitney to show up, and show up big time.  Nashville's top four defensemen are going to provide a good challenge, but they just aren't that deep.

3. Alexander Radulov vs. The Phoenix Coyotes.  Radulov is the one player on the Predators that could single handedly win the series if he gets hot.  It's going to be a tall task for Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Keith Yandle to contain him.  We all know that they will be his shadow on the ice

This is going to be a tough test for the Coyotes. Nashville is big, tough and physical, a lot like Phoenix.   I expect this to be a long, hard fought, and maybe even dirty series.  I miss Raffi Torres already.

Still no winner between the Devils and Panthers, I'm savoring this one until it's over.

Let's Go Yotes!  See you at Jobing.com tomorrow!

Movin' on.

Congratulations are in order as the Coyotes beat the Hawks last night 4-0 to seal up their first trip to the second round since they moved to the Valley. I,  like are Yotes and headed back to the valley today, preparing for round two.  Last night's win cost me approx $200, for tickets to round 2, I'm not a gambler.  I will GLADLY pay to cheer on my Coyotes.  This will also be my first time to the second round, as ticket prices in Washington are astronomical, if you can even get them.

The Coyotes next opponent will be the Nashville Predators.  I don't know a ton about the team, but I do know they feature lots of toughness and grit, as well as stellar goaltending.  The Preds beat the Detroit Red Wings in round one, rather handily, four games to one.

I'll do some homework in the next few days and will post some series breakdowns and fun facts this week.

LETS GO YOTES!!!

Just How Important Is Game Two?

The statistics show that game two of most seven game series' is as close to a crystal ball as you can get.   The winner of game two has gone on to win the seven game series 71.8 percent of the time.  Pretty impressive 'eh?  Think about it this way, if you just won game one, and come out and win game two, you now have a pretty strong hold on the series.  Secondly, if you lost game one, and win game two, not only is the series even, but there is a 50/50 chance that you are going home, with some momentum and confidence for games three and four.   The stats also show that 53% of teams that lost game one, but won game two go on to win the series.  The numbers don't always hold true, just ask Washington, they've been up 2-0 in a series twice in the last 4 years and managed to lose them both, but that's why they play the games.

Now that you have a firm grasp on the numbers, lets apply these to this year's first round series':

LA at VAN- LA wins game 2.  Leads the series 2-0 going back to LA for games 3 and 4.
DET vs NSH- DET evened the series with a game 2 win, and are going home for games 3 and 4.
PHI vs PIT- PHI wins game 2 and leads the series 2-0 going home for game 3 and 4
BOS vs WSH- WSH  evened the series with a game 2 win, and are going home for games 3 and 4.
PHX vs CHI- CHI evened the series with a game 2 win, and are going home for games 3 and 4.
STL vs SJ- SJ evened the series with a game 2 win, and are going home for games 3 and 4.
FLA vs NJ-  Game 2 on Sunday

I will update this post with the results of Saturday's games on Sunday morning.  Hopefully there will be enough to cheer about in Phoenix tonight that my voice will not have healed yet.   Let's go 'Yotes!

*Thanks to NHL.com for the stats.*

Game 1 Recap and Thoughts

The Western Conference quarterfinals between the Coyotes and Blackhawks started out with a bang( in more ways than one) at Jobing.com Arena last night. Marty Hazal tipped in a point shot from Adrian Aucoin at 9:29 of the first overtime period to send most of the white-clad sellout crowd home happy, and with very little voice like me.
The game was a typical Stanley Cup playoff game, fast, physical, low scoring and tight. The game had a little something for everyone. The Hawks scored first on a severe angle shot by Jonathan Toews early in the first period. The Coyotes strugged to solve the Blackhawks "trapping" system early on as well. Corey Crawford made "the save of the night" in the dying seconds of the first period, gloving a point blank shot from Marty Hanzal with less than 10 seconds left.
The Coyotes dominated the second period, committing to the dump and chase beating the Blackhawks trap, which lead to two goals, one for Taylor Pyatt and one for Antoine Vermette. The hits were also coming fast and furious, with each hit drawing a roar from their perspective rowdy fans. Each team had multiple good scoring opportunities during the second and third period as the teams traded penalties. It is noteworthy that the Blackhawks killed off an extended 5 on 3 power play in the second. Dave Bolland went to the box for a hook, and then during that kill, Patrick Sharp sent his clearing attempt all the way down the rink, and into the safety netting above Mike Smith for a delay of game penalty.
The Blackhawks hung in, and kept the pressure on in the third period, finally breaking through with the tying goal with only 14 seconds left in regulation. Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford had been pulled for the extra skater when Brent Seabrook calmly kicked a rebound to his stick and slammed it in a wide open net.
Mike Smith continued to give Phoenix stellar goal tending making 42 saves over the course of regulation and OT. Game 2 will be here in Phoenix on Saturday night, and I would expect more of the same.

This was the second time I have been fortunate enough to be in the stands for playoff overtime, and the first time I've gotten to see the team I'm cheering for win. There were a couple of things that surprised me about game one:

1. Jonathan Toews played, and was effective. I expected him to play, considering he's the Hawks captain and it's the playoffs. I did not expect him to be as effective as he was. Toews took a real beating down in the goal crease and was part of several good scoring chances.
 2. A five on three power play.  Referees are notorious for burying the whistle during the playoffs. Granted the clearing shot by Patrick Sharp that left the rink, over Mike Smith's head, was an automatic call, no judgement there. I couldn't believe Sharp shot the puck that far.
 3. Hits hits and more hits. I don't know what the final number was, but at the end of regulation the Coyotes had registered 44 hits. I don't remember Phoenix playing that physically during the regular year.
4. The visitor's end. There were a number of Blackhawks fans in attendance, and most were well behaved. The one exception was the guy who threw a water bottle on the ice during play. He was quickly escorted out. I also thought it was interesting that 99% of the Hawks fans in attendance were sitting in the end that the Hawks shot twice(aka the 'visitors end'). It was like being at a college sports event where all the fans from the visiting team are in the same end or same section.
 5. In game tweeting. I was not as prepared as I needed to be to tweet during the game. I found it distracted me from the game, and I didn't have enough charge on my cell phone. I will rectify that on Saturday.

There were also a few things that didn't surprise me, and they were:

1. The play of Mike Smith. He's been on fire for a couple months now, that didn't change last night.
2. Crowd noise. Ive been to 8-10 games at Jobing.com this season. The crowd was the loudest Ive been part of by far. This was the second loudest crowd I've been part of, but more on that later.
3. The work ethic of this team. The Coyotes never quit. EVER. It's one of the things that got them to the playoffs, and make me want to keep watching. Below are a couple of pics I took last night. Enjoy, and I can't wait for Saturday!

Coyotes Win 3-2 in Overtime

A new owner...could it be??

A good friend sent me the link to this story in the Phoenix Business Journal.  I know long time Coyotes fans have been through this before, but here is your glimmer of hope for the day.

Channel Guide for the Coyotes Upcoming Playoff Games.

I know this next statement is something we done hear in the Valley very much, but tonight and Saturday's Coyotes playoff games are sold out!!  Coyotes or Hawks fans(yes, we know you are out here) who aren't making the trek to Jobing.com tonight will be able to find the game on Fox Sports Arizona PLUS. I find it disappointing that the Coyotes have been bumped to the plus network so FSA can show a regular season baseball game, but ratings are king. Hockey fans run into this in almost every market where there is an NBA and an MLB team. Luckily back in DC, we only had to deal with the Wizards.  The Nationals and Orioles had their own network(i.e. YES in New York).  Hopefully the 'Yotes can win a series or two, and then the local TV carrier won't matter. The television schedule for the first round series is below.  Let the WHITEOUT BEGIN!!!!

April 12: Game #1 at Glendale: FOX Sports Arizona Plus – pre-game at 6:00 pm/game at 7:00 pm

Top 10 reasons the Coyotes will beat the Blackhawks.

The scientific version...
The Valley is buzzing with hockey talk (ok ok, a  guy can dream) thanks to the Coyotes first ever Pacific Division title.   The Desert Dogs turned heads with an undefeated month of February, and carried that consistent play right through March,  and now have a chance to extend the season late in to April, and possibly May.   The really hard part starts now, as we all know, this franchise has NEVER been out of Round 1 of the chase for Lord Stanley’s chalice.   My job is to explain to you why the Coyotes first round opponent this year, the  Chicago Blackhawks, have  a better chance of winning “Discover Card’s Day with the Cup Sweepstakes” than they do this first round series. Away we go:
1.       Ice.  There is better ice in the desert.   Before you ask me what I’m smoking, think about it.  Jobing.com is, as of now, a hockey only arena.  Even though it’s 2 degrees cooler than hell in the desert right now, the Coyotes can keep the AC on 24 X 7, and let the Suns miss the playoffs at their downtown arena.     The Hawks share the cavernous United Center with the Bulls, and the WNBA, and every other homeless basketball league that wants to play there.    See, better ice in the desert.
2.       Tailgaiting.   Fans in Chicago can’t tailgate outside their swanky downtown arena, besides who would want to, considering it will be butt-hugging cold with a 40 mph “breeze” greeting you.  There is certainly no need for a cooler to keep their crappy beer cold.
3.       Goons.   With stand up guys like Ray Emery, Dan Carcillo, and Jamal Mayers on the roster, the Hawks would have a better chance winning a UFC title than a series in the playoffs.
4.       Andrew Brunette.   We all know blondes have more fun.
5.       Brendan Morrison.  He’s still alive? I thought he was killed in the Vancouver riots last year?
6.       Corey Crafword.  Congratulations, you’re better than Marty Turco…hang your hat on that.
7.       Niklas Hjalmarsson.  QWRTPLKJHGFDSZXCVBNM!!!!!
8.       Sami Lepisto.  WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP
9.       Nicknames.   The Hawks have Patrick “Candy” Kane, and Jonathan “Twinkle” Toews(pronounced taves).  How can guys like “Doaner” and “Smitty” lose to those guys.  Not possible.
10.   Ice Girls.  Last but certainly not least, the ice crew.   What self-respecting, semi-attractive college age woman would choose CHICAGO, land of cold and wind.  Phoenix on the other hand is a mecca for the attractive college age woman.   The “Paw Patrol” has those troll dolls from Chicago beat, hands down.
So there you have it.  The top ten,  rock solid, fool proof reasons that the Phoenix Coyotes will crack the second round for the first time ever in 2012, just months before the end of the world.  Like the t-shirt says, at least we can all die happy.

Welcome to my new Coyotes Blog

Here's a little about me. I'm new to the Valley, moved here in December from Washington D.C.  I love hockey.  I avidly followed the Capitals when in DC, and picked up the Coyotes over the course of the winter. I was tempted to write a "Caps-Centric" blog back east, but there were tons, and I didn't want to be one of the hundreds.   The situation is different here, and I look forward to working my way into a much smaller on-line community, and the playoffs are the best time to get going.
What makes this guy so qualified to write a blog you ask?  My answer is 10 plus years as a fan of the game, and 6 years or so of playing the game.   You may not always agree with the opinions posted here, but hopefully I can entertain you, make you laugh, and grow your interest in the game I love so much.   Feel free to comment on anything, just be respectful.
Thanks for the time, and LET'S GO CAPS  uhhh YOTES.  Ugh, this is going to take some getting used to.
